ESOL (English for speakers of other languages)
If English is not your main language, you can do a course to help you improve your English. These courses are called ESOL or English for Speakers of other Languages.
Improving your English will make it easier to:
- Improve your chances of finding work
- talk to doctors and teachers
- understand the laws and customs of the UK
- do a course and get a qualification
- help your child with homework
- pass the Life in the UK test and become a British citizen
Learning English or improving what you already know is really useful if you want to study, get a job or learn more about your rights and responsibilities.
What does an ESOL course cover?
An ESOL course will include speaking, reading, writing and listening. It will also cover spelling, grammar and punctuation.

How much does a course cost?
The cost of an ESOL course will vary depending on where you study and your personal circumstances. If you are out of work or claiming certain benefits, you may be able to study ESOL for free. In all cases, you should check with the course provider for exact details.
