General Screening

The screening programmes below are aimed at groups of individuals who may be at an increased risk of a condition. It aims to identify, and therefore commence early treatment or management of the condition for that individual to prevent ill health or early deaths

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening is offered to men in their 65th year to detect abdominal aortic aneurysms (a dangerous swelling in the aorta) men over 65 can self-refer. An invitation will be sent to you with the specific area you will need to attend, numbers will be provided so you can ring and discuss your appointment if necessary.

Diabetic Eye Screening

Diabetic Eye Screening is offered from the age of 12 all people with diabetes are offered an annual diabetic eye test to check for early signs of diabetic retinopathy. This is carried out by designated optician. You will be sent a letter inviting you to book an appointment. All diabetics are encouraged to attend regular diabetic checks with their GP or hospital specialist.

Screening Tests during pregnancy and for your new-born baby

While you are pregnant, you will be monitored for your health and the health of your unborn child. Screening tests will be offered during pregnancy, these will be ultrasound scans and blood tests. Blood tests are carried out to monitor for any risks to you or your child.

New-born Blood Spot Screening Test

Every baby is offered a new-born blood spot screening test, also known as a heel prick test. This is ideally carried out when they are 5 days old. New-born spot screening is a precautionary process which involves taking a blood sample to find out if your baby has any health conditions.
