The children’s speech and language service is an evidence-based service that responds to the needs of children and young people who have speech, language, communication and/or eating and drinking difficulties.
The aims of the service are to:
- Enable children and young people to meet their communication potential and eat and drink safely
- Support clients, parents and carers and help them to understand their child’s communication needs and/or eating and drinking difficulties
- Facilitate access to education, leisure and if appropriate employment thus reducing social isolation
- Promote awareness of speech, language and communication and eating and drinking difficulties
The children’s speech and language therapy service follows the Universal, Targeted and Specialist framework of delivery recommended in the Bercow report (2008) for all service users.
Speech and language therapy is specialist provision and is provided when there is an identifiable impact on the child’s speech, language and communication and eating and drinking needs and an identifiable outcome from intervention can only be achieved by a specialist service like speech and language therapy.
Children who have communication needs that are associated with other learning difficulties and children who have delayed speech, language and communication development will receive input via the universal or targeted route. This means that parents and staff in nurseries would provide support.

All speech and language therapists have completed a degree course of between 3 and 4 years. Training includes modules relating to SEN and disabilities.
A rotation schedule to gain experience working with SEN children and disabilities is in place for all newly qualified practitioners.
Experienced staff work in a variety of settings across Wolverhampton supporting children and young people with complex communication and/or feeding difficulties in schools, SEN settings and in the community.
The SLT service provides a written report for parents and other Professionals involved following and initial assessment or review.
- Parents have the opportunity to attend appointments including therapy sessions.
- The views of parents and education staff are important. We obtain both verbal and written feedback via questionnaires to help shape the SLT service.
- The SLT service have developed information leaflets on a range of communication and feeding difficulties and are available in clinics and via the SLT website.
- The SLT website contains printable resources and advice for parents and professionals to support communication development
- All schools and settings in Wolverhampton have a SLT Resource Folder which contains strategies and activities to support communication
- We use interpreters where necessary to ensure parents are in receipt of information in their native language.
We encourage parents to contact the SLT department to discuss any concerns they may have regarding their child’s speech and language intervention. We aim to resolve concerns quickly following departmental and Trust guidelines.
