Health Visiting Service

Health Visitors offer a universal service to all families with pre-school children, providing advice and support in relation to family health needs and child health promotion.

The Health Visitors are based within Health centres as part of the 0-19 service team within localities across the City.

The Health Visiting teams are made up of Public Health Associates, Health and an Administration Hub who work alongside Social Workers, Strengthening Family Workers and Police Officers to meet the needs of families in the city along with GP’s, nurseries and other health agencies such as the hospital, Dentists, Physiotherapists and Dieticians.

All families are offered 5 mandated contacts: antenatally, within 14 days of a baby’s birth, 6-8 weeks, 9-12 months and 2-2 ½ years.

Support is given to the whole family to enable them to achieve the best outcomes, and to ensure the child is meeting developmental milestones.

Services include:-

  • Breastfeeding support and advice
  • Support with neonatal hearing screening
  • Baby clinics – including growth assessments, safety advice and accident prevention
  • Development assessments including referrals to other agencies where appropriate
  • Nutritional advice
  • Oral hygiene and dental care advice
  • Smoking cessation
  • Family support
  • Support with bonding and attachment

Health Visitors can be contacted via the 0-19 service single point of access.
