Adult Social Care assessment for support to live at home

Adult Social Care assessment for people with physical disabilities is an assessment of your needs by a social worker and will also be an assessment to take into account the needs of carers. The service will aim to provide advice and support which makes you as independent as possible in your own home. A range of services and equipment to help you or a relative to live independently can be found here Support to live at home.

Support to live at home with home adaptations and equipment

Home adaptations advice and assessment can be requested from Wolverhampton Independent Living Service which is part of social care.

For more complex problems, major adaptations, e.g. a stair lift or level access shower, may be recommended. In this case following assessment by the Occupational Therapist you will be referred to the Home Improvement Agency at Wolverhampton Homes and may be considered for a Disabled Facilities Grant (subject to means test) if you are a homeowner, or a private tenant. Different financial arrangements apply for tenants of Wolverhampton Homes.

Using Direct payments to appoint a Personal Assistants to help you in your home or community

Direct payments enable you to purchase services from care providers or employ your own support worker – known as a personal assistant (PA). You will then have more choice and control over how your support needs are met. Your support would be personalised to meet your requirements. However, taking on a PA turns you (as a direct payments holder) into an employer with all the legal, financial and practical issues that entails.

Direct payment work in partnership with an organisation called Barrie Bookkeeping who will provide a payroll service for you in order to pay your staff and provide advice and support about employing and managing payments with your PA.

To find out whether you are eligible to access the service and to see more information including factsheets and guides about employing a Personal Assistant through the use of Direct Payment, Adult Social Care please visit Direct payments.
