Educational Psychology Service

Educational Psychologists are professionals who specialise in child development, learning needs and emotional wellbeing, using psychological theories to help recommend appropriate support.

We work with children and young people up to the age of 25 years, working closely with parent/carer(s), the young person and other professionals to better understand the needs of the young person. This could involve visits at school and/or at home. Educational Psychologists in Wolverhampton work within the Inclusion Support Service alongside Trainee Educational Psychologists and Assistant Psychologists.

Most of the schools in Wolverhampton subscribe to our service and are provided with a ‘link’ Educational Psychologist. We work with Wolverhampton maintained schools, academies and specialist settings. The service seeks to work proactively with schools to ensure there is early identification of children who might benefit from support and a graduated response following an assess, plan, do, review process in order to meet their needs.

We offer support on a range of levels from working to support individual children to providing whole-school training and organisational development support.

How do you access the service?

An Educational Psychologist can only become involved with parent/carer(s) and the young person’s permission. Referrals to Wolverhampton Educational Psychology Service are usually received from schools or other educational settings. If you think that you or your child should be supported by the EPS, you should contact the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) at the school, college or nursery. We do not currently take referrals directly from parents.

An Educational Psychologist will automatically become involved if an Education Health and Care Plan Assessment is requested for a child or young person.

If a child or young person is in care, excluded, not attending school or is being supported by the Youth Offending Team, the Local Authority might ask the Educational Psychologist to be involved.

How are people who use the service involved in decisions and kept informed?

Parents and carers will be involved in the assessment and planning process, usually by meeting with the educational psychologist and other staff at the educational setting. We sometimes visit children and parents/ carers at home. Where it is helpful, we will write a report about our involvement with a child or young person. We can arrange for an interpreter where it is necessary.
