Lymphoedema is a condition that occurs when there is damage to the body’s lymphatic system resulting in a large, and sometimes uncomfortable, swelling – usually in the arms or legs. It is thought to affect more than 200,000 people in the UK.
Lymphoedema can either occur from birth or underdevelopment (Primary Lymphoedema) or as a result of injury, infection or surgery to deliberately remove lymph nodes (Secondary Lymphoedema).
Whilst there isn’t any known cure for Lymphoedema, the good news is that there are treatments that can help reduce the swelling and discomfort of the condition.
Whatever the cause of your Lymphoedema, our specialist team are on hand to help support and enable you to continue to live an independent life with this condition.
Our specialist team will work with you to develop an individually tailored treatment plan.
Treatment may include a combination of exercise, skin care and compression garments which are designed to put pressure on tissues in the body to stop fluid build-up and encourage fluid to drain. If needed, more specialist treatment, such as lymphatic drainage massage, is available to you.
