Virtual School (VS) promotes the educational achievement of children and young people in care through a range of strategies including direct pupil support and training/advisory work with schools.
All children and young people in the 'Virtual School' - from early years to post-16 - are monitored and supported. The Virtual School Head (VSH), who manages the service, also supports the Education, Employment & Training fo Care Leavers as well as the educational engagement of young people in the Youth Justice System. VSH also provides information and advice to support the educational achievement of children and young people previously in care (in accordance with statutory guidance).
The VSH is now also the Service Manager for Vulnerable Learners, which helps to ensure cohesion in the Council's support for all of its vulnerable pupils. Referrals to Virtual School are usually made via social workers or Designated Teachers, although the service are proactive in the identification of need by supporting (for example) the PEP process.
Virtual School liaise with Designated Teachers and other key partners on a regular basis to ensure that partners are informed about the service and are enabled to meet the needs of children and young people in care. The VSH attends YOT education engagement panels to ensure strong links with YOT. An overview of the work of the VSH and Virtual School is provided in the Virtual School Head annual report.
Compliments or complaints should be directed to the VSH.
