UK Gout Society

Gout is a type of arthritis that causes sudden and extremely painful attacks in the joints of the foot, knee, ankle, hand and wrist – especially the big toe.

It is a common joint disease affecting one in 14 men and one in 35 women. In men, it can occur any time after puberty, whereas in women it is uncommon before the menopause. In around one in ten cases, there is a family history of the disorder. It is rare in children.

The UK Gout Society is a registered charity and was established in 2002 to provide basic information to people living with gout, their families, friends and carers - and increase public awareness about this painful, potentially disabling, but very treatable, disorder.

Our trustee board comprises experienced rheumatologists and health professionals working in the field of gout.

The UK Gout Society is a member of ARMA (Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance) - the umbrella body providing a collective voice for the arthritis and musculoskeletal community in the UK.

Unfortunately, we do not currently operate a helpline but endeavour to respond to email and postal enquiries as soon as possible.

For further information please contact us or visit our website. Here you will find a host of information, factsheets, booklets and online guides about the gout condition.
