The Switch Squad

The Switch Squad is a social & emotional learning programme delivered into schools by the team from Switch Midlands.

Using the skills and experience we have developed of offering alternative provision to schools and working with the city’s most vulnerable and at-risk young people, these sessions deliver both targeted and universal support for your pupils in a range of topics, such as wellbeing and PSHE. Staff delivering the programme are trained in a variety of approaches, including emotion coaching, mental health first aid, restorative practice, behaviour management and teaching and learning – as well as having enhanced DBS checks and safeguarding training.

The programmes cover the key concepts of social and emotional learning, whihc are:

  • Responsible decision making
  • Relationship skills
  • Self management
  • Social awareness
  • Self awareness

The programme, in line with the DfE PSHE requirements, explores and supports pupils with recognising and developing safe and positive friendships and relationships, including online. We will help pupils with their understanding of healthy family life, whilst also being respectful of the wider community and how we are all different.

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) found that through supporting pupils’ social and emotional learning, schools can see:

  • Improved academic performance
  • Improved attitudes, behaviour and relationships with peers
  • Reduced emotional distress
  • Reduced levels of bullying
  • Reduced conduct problems
  • Improved school connection and cultural capital provision

Notes

Our support is delivered as outreach into schools, enhancing your curriculum and teaching. We understand that every school is unique, sessions can be delivered in a variety of ways – such as:

Whole Day or Half Day Workshops for a class-size group of pupils. The session offers a positive and engaging set of activities that focus on developing self-esteem, confidence, and empowerment, encouraging pupils to work collaboratively and challenge them to reflect on how they can make small, achievable changes to help them in school, at home and in the community. All we need is the space to deliver the workshop to a larger group, for example a sports hall or theatre.

Weekly Workshops over the course of half-a-term a Switch Coach will attend your school for either a morning or afternoon a week to deliver sessions to either:
a) Pupils who have been identified as requiring additional support with behaviour or wellbeing. In the time the Switch Coach has with your school, they can work with small groups or 1:1s depending on your requirements, and the approach can be highly targeted to specific needs.
b) To a whole class, which also enables PPA release time cover for your staff.
