Be Sepsis Savvy. Spot the Signs. Save Lives.

Every 3 seconds around the world, someone dies from sepsis; 5 people die from it every hour in the UK. By being SepsisSavvy, we can help to prevent some of these deaths and improve outcomes for survivors.

Sepsis is the immune system’s overreaction and extreme response to an infection. It is life-threatening as the immune system begins to attack our body’s own tissues and organs.  Anyone can get sepsis regardless of age.

Symptoms of sepsis:

In adults:

  • Slurred speech or confusion
  • Extreme shivering or muscle pain
  • Passing no urine (in a day)
  • Severe breathlessness
  • It feels like you’re going to die
  • Skin mottled or discoloured

In children:

  • Breathing very fast
  • Has a ‘fit’ or convulsion
  • Looks mottled, bluish or pale
  • Has a rash that does not fade when you press it
  • Is very lethargic or difficult to wake
  • Feels abnormally cold to touch

The UK Sepsis Trust (UKST) exists to fight this life-threatening condition, stop preventable deaths and support those affected by sepsis.

The NHS also has detailed information on the condition.
